Custom Jerseys

Biketerra avatars now support custom jersey textures! These are saved as image files you can upload in the avatar editor. You can find the avatar editor by clicking your name in the top-right of this page, selecting Settings, and then switching to the Avatar tab.

Templates

Includes an overlay of mesh lines and text labels indicating how different parts of the texture map to the 3D geometry.

Plain white, without annotations.

Annotations are included in separate layers which can be enabled/disabled as needed. Compatible with photopea.com

Guidelines

Software

To create your jersey texture, download a template from the links above and draw your art on top of it. You may use any graphics software - free alternatives to Photoshop include GIMP or the browser-based Photopea.

Design tips

  • For the best results, try to avoid highly-saturated colors. This includes full-black or full-white colors - a very dark gray (e.g. #111111) or very pale gray (e.g. #eeeeee) will appear far better in the app's lighting conditions
  • The default template includes a few pixels of margin around the rendered template - ensure your design continues into this margin to avoid visible seams
  • The black portions of the template will not be visible in your design
  • In multiplayer rides, your avatar icon in the rider list will show the chest area of your jersey design
  • Transparency is supported, and skin color will be shown as an underlay. This means you are able to create sleeveless jerseys or add skin decoration like tattoos. Any file with transparency must be exported in a format that supports alpha channels, such as PNG or WebP
  • The annotated template includes guide lines for vests/sleeveless jerseys (dotted line) and for raglan sleeves (dashed line)
  • You can drag-drop files onto the avatar editor, which may be more convenient when iterating on designs than browsing

Layout + Seams

The template shows how each different part of the 2D image will be mapped onto the 3D geometry of the rider. The template is made up of different sections of the jersey that have been cut up and laid flat - there are seams around each sleeve, and also dividing the front and back of the jersey. In order to have your design continue cleanly across the seams, pay close attention to how the different parts of the template will be joined together in 3D.

Distortion

Because the textures are being mapped from 2D to 3D, the texture will be distorted and stretched - especially as the avatar moves between postures. Different areas of the texture will be distorted in different ways. This distortion is generally unavoidable, but can be worked around - for example, avoid putting detailed graphics around the armpits.

Note, also, that different body types will exhibit slightly different patterns of distortion. The mesh grid shown in the annotated templates is for the masculine model only.

File format

Jersey images should be square, and ideally 512x512 pixels in resolution. JPEG files are preferred, unless you are sure of a reason to use another format like PNG - for example, if you require transparency.

Inappropriate designs

Please be aware that any designs which may cause shock, disgust, or distress will be removed, and your account may be suspended without refund. Designs should not include any political messaging. Remember the golden rule that you should only submit designs that you would be willing to wear in real life.
